Public Service Announcement: SCHEELS Edition

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog. Today I am focusing on the organization SCHEELS. Most of us are aware of this well-known sporting goods store, but have you ever wondered what they do in return for the community? Let’s find out.

I thought it would be inspiring to hear about how SCHEELS shows they care about their customers, and how they get involved in the community. Throughout this blog I will discuss these five examples of how SCHEELS gives back to the community: Athletics, Education, Conservation, Social Services/Health and Donations. Some of these items on the list aren’t exactly self-explanatory, so I will explain as I go.

Athletics. SCHEELS supports athletics by sponsoring a variety of athletic programs across communities for college, high school and youth. Providing availability of athletic programs to these groups is sure to bring communities together. Those involved get a chance to learn the values of teamwork and more.

Education. SCHEELS promotes learning beyond the classroom. One way SCHEELS does this is by hosting field trips for schools in the area. Kids also have the option to participate in the “Walk of Presidents” that SCHEELS organizes. The Walk Of Presidents is an opportunity to learn about the history of our presidents of the United States. There are a total of 14 sculptures for visitors to observe of the most iconic former presidents.

Conservation. Not only does SCHEELS spread awareness on the importance of conservation, they also have made programs dedicated to do so, like the “Refuge Garden Project”. They also provide hunters’ safety classes.

Social Services and Health. SCHEELS puts on a variety of fundraisers such as bake sales, silent auctions and more to raise money for medical research. SCHEELS has really made a difference for families suffering the impacts of medical illnesses.

Donations. SCHEELS gives back in several ways, including the generous donations they make. They actually donate up to 10% of their annual profits to organizations in local communities. One example of where this money goes to is Veteran Services within the community.

Before learning all these methods that SCHEELS gives back to the community, I had no idea of the amazing changes they are capable of and all they have to take credit for. It is nothing short of inspiring.

Final Blog

I can not believe the time has flown by this fast. This is officially my last blog! I have enjoyed getting to express my thoughts and opinions, as well as improve my writing skills, among all sorts of other benefits. This experience of having my very own personal blog has been exciting, and about learning and discovering new things. I am pleased I can now say that I have done it, made my own blog. (even if it was a class that gave me the push I needed to try something new like this, I’m glad it happened.)

For the topic for my final blog, I will be going over some information I learned from the slides in my social media class. Part of it entails a specific area of social media and how it can be applied. I will write about Social Care and the key ways it integrates social media into its industry.

Social media is an important tool to take advantage of in the social care industry for three main reasons that I observed. One being to provide creation executions of campaigns. Another, to foster and maintain existing relationships among the members of the online community. My last example is, because social care has become an integrated part of the awareness social media professionals need.

In order to set up a proactive social care program for not only businesses, but social media professionals as well, this required something to be set up. And with this unique set up, the following could successfully take place: establishment of a team of professionals who are trained, establishment of key performance indicators to determine failure or success, creation of designated responsibilities and training protocols, and assignment of specific tasks for certain employees. All around, this turned out to be highly beneficial in the workplace at hand.

Now I will list some benefits I learned that come with social care. Understanding it is not only the products people are concerned about, but the experience. And it makes it easy for the customer to get on with their business.

I found this information about social care interesting and I hope you did too! For now I will be done blogging, but maybe I will attempt it again one day, considering how much I enjoyed it. Thanks for reading 🙂

Social Media and Entertainment

In this week’s blog, I would like to focus on something that sparks my interest, and I hope it sparks yours as well! Something I learned today in my Social Media Campaigns class.I will be exploring different specializations in social media. You may wonder what this means, so I’ll explain as I go.

There are four main areas to discuss, those being: sports, entertainment, crisis communication and journalism. These fields all use social media to their advantage, and in a variety of different ways.

Mainly I will go into detail about entertainment, because I find that category is the most appealing to me. And I would like to say the reason for that. I decided to pick entertainment because it seems like the most exciting/interesting option and it seems like there’s not as much pressure or things to worry about in comparison to crisis communication or sports, or even journalism. When covering the entertainment area, what I would need to focus on is to raise awareness of brands, create hype for upcoming competitions, tv shows, individuals, sports figures and events. That seems like something I could really get into and succeed at.

Now I will identify the areas in which social media can be applied. Social media is a really cool thing, it has the power to reach virtually everyone, make an impact/impression on people, and spread all kinds of information, as well as way to advertise, and is a hub for communication. Each area of entertainment has utilized social media to its advantage by raising awareness of brands and by creating hype for upcoming competitions, television shows, events, individuals, and sports figures as I mentioned before. In contrast, some celebrities use social media not to be constantly active/engaged, but to create some mystery. Loyal fans are crucial to have on social media and be behind your brand. It’s important to be aware of trolls.

I hope you learned a little bit from the information I just learned, I’m glad I could share. Thanks for reading! Next week is my last blog already, time has really flown by. I’ll see you then!

Here is the link to the slideshow where I got my information.

Blog 5

Hello, it has been a while! Welcome back to my personal blog.

Since the title, doesn’t give any hints, you probably have mo idea what’s in store for this blog. Well here it is, I hope it doesn’t disappoint!

This week in class we had an intriguing topic for our discussion post: Who is my favorite influencer and why? It got me thinking. Who is a role model in my life? A figure that has shaped me into who I am today?

Well, one route you can take is thinking of celebrities who inspire you most. Have they gained your respect somehow? Do you appreciate their morals and values? Or even just their generosity based on how they choose to spend their money? I chose Jeffree Star in my discussion for all those reasons above. I just think he’s a very genuine person, and he’s unapologetically himself, despite all the criticism and hatred he faces for being gay and practically any other reason someone could find an excuse to bash him for. He is very kind with his money and helps out his fans in need. He goes above and beyond, even though he gets nothing in return.

Another celebrity who I think deserves recognition and praise is Pink. She is a strong, independent talented woman, and an amazing mom from the videos I’ve seen and speeches I’ve heard her give on TV. I actually just saw an article about her today, saying that her, and her son had both gotten the corona virus. This is her tweet “Two weeks ago my three-year old son, Jameson and I were showing symptoms of COVID-19. Fortunately, our primary care physician had access to tests and I tested positive.” They are recovered now. And what did Pink do in response when it was all over? She’s donating so much of her own fortune to help in many ways with this COVID-19 pandemic! “She announced that in order to support “health care professionals who are battling on the frontlines every day” she would be donating $500,000, around £407,497, to Temple University Emergency Fund in Philadelphia, as well as the same amount to the City of Los Angele’s Mayor’s Emergency COVID-19 Crisis Fund. P!nk revealed the money for the hospital fund was being donated in honor of her mother, Judy Moore, who worked there for 18 years.” What an inspiration. I admire her more and more all the time. I hope to see her in concert one day.

How does distance affect communication and relationships?

This week for my blog, I want to talk about the importance of physical interaction while having conversation and displaying communication with others. It plays a big role in how the conversation will unfold and what the results will be, just by seeing their face, and hearing their tone. You will be able to absorb so much more information if you’re not hiding behind a phone or computer screen. Yes, technology, particularly social media offers a way to connect with others at great distances, but how beneficial is it really? I would prefer a face to face conversation. Studies have found that the elements of  communication include: 7 percent verbal and 93 percent non-verbal. The non-verbal component was made up of body language (55 percent) and tone of voice (38 percent). And that is exactly why it makes such a difference if you’re physically in each others presence.

This absolutely is directly connected with relationships. But how does the way you communicate impact the relationships with people in our lives? There is so much more of a personal touch when you’re face to face. It is easier to receive the other person’s full attention, there are less distractions in the way. And it is easier to notice how much they care, by showing affection like a hug. It means a lot.

Social media can create jealously and conflict between two people in a relationship. For one reason, it is so easy for you to become in contact with anyone, and somebody out there will most likely send you a message wanting to flirt and or attempt to get involved in your life. Even a like can be considered flirting on todays social media platforms.

One way I think to keep your friendships and your romantic relationship successful, is to make time for them, let them know they’re a priority in your life, and communicate with them often. As long as both sides put in an effort, happiness with the people you love is acheivable.

My Views on Social Media

This week on my blog, I decided I want my topic to be what social media means to me. Some of my opinions involving social media are good, and some are not so good. For starters, I feel that most people when posting on social media are trying to make a false representation of their life, just trying to keep a good status. I’m guilty of it too. I feel like everyone is trying to make the viewers jealous of their life, or just seeking attention in a lot of cases. Social media can also play a big role in breaking relationships. It is so easy to send someone a flirty message when you see someone’s picture, even simply liking someone’s picture could be another form of flirting. The main thing is, the people in the relationship have to trust each other. Sometimes I do worry that it is too time consuming, as well as addictive. But as long as people make an effort to limit their screen time, that could help tremendously.

Now on a more optimistic note, there are so many benefits to social media. Getting likes on a picture can literally improve your mood because it makes you produce dopamine, which is a chemical that is associated with pleasure. But social media is so much more than the amount of likes you get, it’s about expressing yourself and making you happy! Another advantage of having social media is all the connections you have. You can have access to almost anyone and keep in contact with friends from across the world. Personally, I love having a Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram, I love seeing what my friends and family are up to on a daily basis, it helps make up for the fact that I can’t spend time with them every day. And of course, the obvious point that social media is entertaining, I see videos that make me laugh every day on Tik Tok, and I learn how to improve my makeup skills on Instagram beauty tutorials and I get to express myself through tweets and keep up with people I care about with updates on Snapchat, and have easy access to daily conversations.

Overall, I can see the advantages and disadvantages of social media. I would say for the most part I encourage people to use it. A good tip to not let social media take over your life is taking temporary breaks from it. My best friend stopped using social media for an entire year and he said he’s never felt better and loves all the extra time he has on his hands. That’s all I have for today, until next week.

The tragedy of reality in Australia today

Hello all, this is my second blog ever, and of course my goal is to make it an interesting read for you, and any audience it may reach. In hopes to achieve that, I constructed the following is a mixture of facts and statistics about one crisis the world is currently facing, as well as my personal thoughts and opinions, a view into my perspective as a person. That being said, I hope you learn something new, and that you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Lately, I have been devasted learning about how dangerous and damaging the wildfires have been to Australia in many ways. Today I would like to share some information and spread some awareness about the impacts to Australia and its wildlife due to the wildfires. Specifically, I would like to focus on koalas because they’re famously known to exist in Australia, and they are actually one of my favorite animals.  Estimate’s suggests up to 8,400 koalas may have perished in the bushfires. Some good news involving the koalas though, is that a statement recently put onto social media claiming that koalas are functionally extinct is an exaggeration and technically incorrect.  However, the species is under major threat unfortunately.

Australia has always been at the top of my bucket list for places I want to visit at some point in the future. It is a gorgeous country from coast to coast according to pictures and videos I’ve seen, but I would love to experience the beauty for myself one day, with my own two eyes. I actually have a friend who just spent about three weeks in Australia, and I got so jealous after hearing his stories, unique experiences, and seeing the photos he took there. To me, the ocean shoreline in a hot climate area will always be one of my favorite places. There’s so much beauty to admire, and it is so captivating that all my stress from reality kind of melts away. You could say it is my happy place. I even got a tattoo inspired by that exact scene, representing my forever happy place.

Even before these disastrous fires, koala populations were already declining. Before this year’s bushfire crisis, koala populations in NSW and Queensland had already dropped by 42% between 1990 and 2010, according to the federal threatened species scientific committee. It’s incredible how rapidly these animal’s population dwindled within twenty years, with no particular major cause.

Thanks for your time and attention, and whether you learned a little bit about the koalas/fires in Australia, or a little bit about me, or both, I appreciate you viewers and hope you gained something valuable to you, even if it was just an entertaining read.

How Social Media can be unethical at times

To introduce myself; hi I am Emma and welcome to my blog, feel free to tune into my future blogs if you enjoy reading this one.

The subject at hand that I’m choosing for my very first blog post is how blackmail is used and it’s impacts on social media. I actually have a specific story that is a perfect example for my topic.

Nikkie De Jager is a dutch makeup artist and beauty vlogger. She arose to fame through her youtube videos demonstrating the power of makeup, she now has 13 million subscribers. Not to mention a net worth of over $6 million.

Nikkie has recently come out as transgender. Sadly, not under her own choice of circumstances. Somebody in her life who knew her secret threatened to leak this information. So Nikkie decided to beat them to the punch, so that her fans that adore her could hear this shocking news from Nikkie herself.

I have always admired Nikkie. In the beginning, it was because she has a great talent as a makeup artist. As I became to be, what I consider somewhat of a makeup guru myself, I continued to watch her videos. As I saw more of her, her character and personality started to shine through. And I began to not only admire her for her makeup skills, but also because she seemed to be kind-hearted, funny and sweet. Now that she has come out, my opinions of her have not lessened. If anything, they have only got higher, Nikkie is truly an inspiration for her courage, strength and wisdom.

To wrap up my thoughts, I’d like to add that peer pressure and threats happen constantly on social media. These things can have very negative results, like bullying that leads to suicide. It is not right or fair. Unfortunately there is no way to prevent it, all we can do is spread awareness and inform people, and hope they make the right choice from there. It is important to learn from our own mistakes, as well as from the mistakes we have witnessed other people make.

Thank you for tuning into my blog and letting me voice my thoughts and share my opinions.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
