How Social Media can be unethical at times

To introduce myself; hi I am Emma and welcome to my blog, feel free to tune into my future blogs if you enjoy reading this one.

The subject at hand that I’m choosing for my very first blog post is how blackmail is used and it’s impacts on social media. I actually have a specific story that is a perfect example for my topic.

Nikkie De Jager is a dutch makeup artist and beauty vlogger. She arose to fame through her youtube videos demonstrating the power of makeup, she now has 13 million subscribers. Not to mention a net worth of over $6 million.

Nikkie has recently come out as transgender. Sadly, not under her own choice of circumstances. Somebody in her life who knew her secret threatened to leak this information. So Nikkie decided to beat them to the punch, so that her fans that adore her could hear this shocking news from Nikkie herself.

I have always admired Nikkie. In the beginning, it was because she has a great talent as a makeup artist. As I became to be, what I consider somewhat of a makeup guru myself, I continued to watch her videos. As I saw more of her, her character and personality started to shine through. And I began to not only admire her for her makeup skills, but also because she seemed to be kind-hearted, funny and sweet. Now that she has come out, my opinions of her have not lessened. If anything, they have only got higher, Nikkie is truly an inspiration for her courage, strength and wisdom.

To wrap up my thoughts, I’d like to add that peer pressure and threats happen constantly on social media. These things can have very negative results, like bullying that leads to suicide. It is not right or fair. Unfortunately there is no way to prevent it, all we can do is spread awareness and inform people, and hope they make the right choice from there. It is important to learn from our own mistakes, as well as from the mistakes we have witnessed other people make.

Thank you for tuning into my blog and letting me voice my thoughts and share my opinions.
